I know during Christmas it had a good percentage off, any particular time during the year that it's best to buy it?

Depends on the country and the ESET Partner (sometimes X company offers a discount in someway

but ESET is not related and other ESET Partners either).

Indeed. My local reseller/distributor NEVER have any special deals at any time during the year. The only "deal" you get is the % off on the renewal price - which is a shame as all people likes to save a few bucks when possible. ESET should consider having a international campaign once a year at least, during christmas or whatever, and it should be mandatory for all local parties to be part of it. Nope, if I want to find good ESET deals, searching online is the only way to find any, with a bit of luck.

  2. In this section you find Certification Tests using the AMTSO Real Time Threat List (RTTL). The RTTL is a repository of malware samples collected from around the world, and is managed, maintained and secured by the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO). Through the RTTL, AMTSO has provided a common platform where testers can access malware samples and related telemetry data provided by vendors and academics. The RTTL provides a way for testers to setup up new ways of testing based on prevalence-weighted and region-specific malware samples.

Using the RTTL extends the range of tests, and certifications based on it allow businesses and consumers to make more informed decisions when selecting a product. Using our Real-World Testing framework we are simulating a user using a computer. By exposing the machine to samples pulled from the RTTL we can give an overview of the core protection capabilities of the security product.

  3. What application is detected and what is the (if you know) purpose of the application that ESET detects ?

No, it does most likely not belong to anything related to the operation of your OS, but it may be used for it.

Got another of these errors just a few minutes ago.

Edit: this time it seems the error shows up ONLY when I try to open the following thread. I have tried to open it several times and it always ends in one of these errors (request blocked) from Cloud Front.

    https://forum.eset.com/topic/7946-after-upgrade-to-version-9-smartermail-and-wp-admin-blocked/

    1. The thread in my quote above opens up just fine now.

    2. Received another error from Cloud Front when I tried to create my Threatsense updates thread, but the thread got published on the forum despite the error.

  5. Hi,

It seems the old threatsense update page with its simple design and search function is gone from the U.S. website after the new layout design was implemented. Or is it just me that can't find it ?

This is all I find, and a link to the Virus Radar page.

    hxxp://www.eset.com/us/threat-center/threatsense-updates/

I miss the old simple threatsense updates page....

    hxxp://eset.ca/us/threat-center/threatsense-updates/

...since we 1) don't need to click on each update to expand the list, and 2) we can also search and relevant result will be highlighted in the VSD updates containing the search term.

On the new page we have to click on each update to expand the list, and there's also no search function (except month/year) like the one on the old page above.

    hxxp://virusradar.com/en/update/info

    So I wonder two things.

1). How long will the old simple threatsense updates page stay with us ?

2). Any plans to improve the new VSD updates page on the Virus Radar site with some functions from the old page ?

I have bookmarked the old threatsense updates page (on the canadian ? site) so I know where to find it if I need it. ^_^

  6. hxxp://blog.emsisoft.com/2016/04/13/why-antivirus-uses-so-much-ram-and-why-that-is-actually-a-good-thing/

I felt I had to edited the title and add the word "some" in the thread title, because every AV/AM on the market is not designed like ESET and Emsisoft. Avast for example is not, unless they have changed recently.

Though some parts, like the "ram is cheap" part, could have been left out as an argument for having this design since that have NOTHING to do with why Emsisoft, ESET and others choose to design their software like this, at all.

And it also adds confusion as seen in the comments section where more than one person really don't understand the whole reason behind why this design is superior, and that it actually helps the system performance for all users, even for those "heavy duty" users like Martin and Adrean.

All in all, a good article that explains it nicely, but it could have been written a bit differently to prevent some blog readers (and Emsisoft users) from making the wrong conclusion.

(One can mention that some might use much ram when they shouldn't, but that is not the case here. And the engine + more may be coded in a crappy way so the software runs like crapp, then all this doesn't matter of course.)

"Update: I just looked at my current license and per ESET's license email they sent me, it does say I can install it on up to 5 PCs, but I have installed it on more than 5 with no problems....I'm so confused"

You may not have any issues...yet.

Afaik, the problem is not that you are able to actually install the product, but (in short) allow updates to be downloaded to more computers than your license is good for which should be against the EULA* ?

Afaik, you could probably install the product on e.g 20 PC that are always offline, never connected to the internet, and no one would ever find out since they are offline - and of course the product would be "out of date" forever. But if you let the product on those 20PC (using a 5 PC license) download updates from ESET's servers, then something will eventually happen.....Installing is one thing, but keeping the product up to date by letting it download updates is also key obviously, ESET surely has systems in place to keep track of this.

    * I imagine it is against the EULA (like most people I have not read it) to install it on more PC's than what the license is good for, I only wanted to point out that software -> updates/license verification servers plays a role. And since this product requires an internet connection for updates and to also take advantage of LiveGrid, it would be of no use on those offline PCs. Again, ESET surely has systems in place to keep track of this and will take action when needed.

But if I know my license is good for 5 PCs then why would I install the product on a 6'th PC only to see if it is possible and/or what would happen. I am pretty sure that if something would happen, it would not be in my favor as I was the one that did wrong.

This does not answer your question on PC vs. Android, but since some of these license offers/packages tend to be a regional thing and may differ between the U.S., europe, asia etc... I will not try to figure that out.

I don't know, but since you first thought that your license was good for 10PCs, but turned out to be good only for 5PCs, some changes/clarification in the license information that customers receive by email after purchase may be needed, to prevent and help customers from making this type of (minor) mistakes.

I understand what happens when you try things. My intention is not to circumvent any license restrictions ...etc. Anyway, moving on...  <_<

Hi, I didn't meant to say that it was your intention - only that it technically is possible. And that the license email sent to customers may need some clarifications to make things clearer. Sorry if you got the wrong impression.

  9.

Kapersky indeed does offer a DDoS solution:

Kaspersky Lab is the first anti-malware vendor to provide a DDoS protection solution – and that means no other anti-DDoS supplier can match the expertise and scale of our in-house security intelligence department and infrastructure.

A few more details on this solution:

If you require a turnkey solution, Kaspersky Lab and its partners can cover the vast majority of set up procedures – including:

    • Installing the sensor software and hardware on your site

    • Setting up traffic redirection to our cleaning centers

    • Setting up ‘clean’ traffic delivery to your business

    Ref.: hxxp://media.kaspersky.com/kaspersky-ddos-protection-data-sheet.pdf

Hum ............... This Kapersky solution looks eerily similar to the ISP recommendation I posted previously.

It appears that you are confusing DoS protection that exists in many security vendor software firewall products with what is required for DDoS protection.

Dear itman it seems that you do not understand how strong is DDoS attack

Difference between dos and ddos attack is dos have weak attack and ddos have strong attack

Hmmm...so you know that they are strong attacks and difficult to handle, even for some ISP's - and at the same time you believe a simple consumer router like TL-WR841N will help against it.

"Maybe I got it wrong info about kaspersky but they have the best firewall for networks and are the best on the market".

I understand now. They are the best. But you still want to use ESET :)

  10. Description: Default Deny

Detail: Auto block applications that are not on a white-list determined by ESET.

Default Deny (if you meant by default) will not work as the majority of ESET's customers want (and need) a product that is easy to use with no unnecessary popups or detection notifications with questions like "allow, block, quarantine".

I gave a suggestion myself a while ago that you may like which should work with the help of data from Livegrid.

    https://forum.eset.com/topic/51-future-changes-to-eset-smart-security/page-14#entry17761

I am not a fan of auto block as that would automatically block everything that is not yet on the white-list. I want to control that myself, which is part of my suggestion above.

  12. Interesting note.....

    Getting Products

Both, AV-Comparatives and MRG Effitas tried to get a license for CylanceProtect. Unfortunately, this was nearly impossible. It was tried via two IT system houses (one in Italy, one in Austria). Both did not get any license, even if they asked for a regular sales. Fortunately, a third party granted access to the license of Cylance. This behaviour is seen by many of the newer products that claim to be next generation. It looks like they try to avoid getting tested in order to continue to attract users simple by unproven marketing claims .

The other tested vendor gave the license immediately for free.

The costs of the test have been covered by the testing labs, no vendor commissioned this specific test.

    .....And interesting results.....
