  1. Thanks again for all the comments.  These freezes are harder to capture with ProcMon than I expected, but I have three now.  Two of them were NOD32 reading a file, but different files each time.  The other was Firefox reading a file.

I have concluded that my problem is likely hardware or system software, but probably not Win7 or NOD32.  I suspect my system is going into a tight disk-read loop.  The disk reads number in the tens of millions at the time of the freeze and are by far the most of any file during the entire ProcMon session.  I have a few tweaks I can try first, but I am guessing a new computer is going to be the best choice.  Therefore, I will mark this thread 'solved'.

How old is the computer? What are your system specs?

Some of use are having similar problems which we have been talking about in this thread. https://forum.eset.com/topic/610-nod-32-seems-to-be-causing-freeze-during-boot/

Wow... I just finished making a half page post, and then when I submitted the post only the one sentence above appeared in the post!! I even had to add the link back to the one sentence it managed to preserve of my post.  Sorry, but I don't have time to make the post again right now. It must be a bug with the forum.

Hi, I have had that happen to me too one time on this forum, very annoying. But on other forums I have got logged out after clicking on the submit/post button.

So, since a couple of years ago I have started a good habit of copying all of the text right before I click on the post button, just incase something bad would happen, getting logged out, or text disappearing for some reason. Then I can just paste in the text and try to post again. Without the need to write everything all over. Just a tip :)

I actually do that a lot, but I forgot to this time. I usually copy my post to notepad. Yea, i've seen many similar issues with other forums.

  4. So far I have not had the system hang with NOD 32 V7 beta, but I do have a long pause when the desktop is loading. It is freezing each time at the desktop, but it recovers on it's own. All the quick lunch icons on the taskbar fade out to a solid white color, and so do the icons on the desktop. It's freezing for a while, but so far it has recovered on it's own. I wonder if maybe NOD 32 is having a conflict with some of the firmware, or other software that came installed with this Laptop. I do know that if I uninstall some of the bloatware that came with this Laptop my bootime is shortened considerably. I'm going to continue using the beta since I will be switching to it soon anyways.

One thing I would like to mention is I experienced high CPU usage right after installing NOD 32 V7 beta. It continued to spike randomly until after I had rebooted 3 times, and it went away. I did allow NOD 32 to complete its scan after the installation. Could someome recommend me a good application to use that will monitor CPU usage, and alert me automatically when a process uses a preset threshold amount of CPU. I would also like it if the application could be configured to begin logging active processes or maybe just the process that is using high amounts of CPU. I have been using Process Monitor from Microsoft in the past, but I do not know how to configure it to do this if it is even possible. So I need an appliction to monitor active processes, alert me of a process using high CPU resources, and automatically start logging that process. I would also need a guide for how to set it up to do this. Thank you in advance for any info provided!

I'm not having any luck. I was able to make all the registry changes as directed, but i'm still unable to make Windows Dump it's memory with the Hotkeys. Nothing happens at all when I hold down the right most Alt key, and press Scroll Lock twice in a roll. Num Lock, and Scroll Lock is the same key on my Laptop. Maybe I should define a different key Combo to initiate the Memory Dump. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi again, Hmmm i'm not sure if you did a typo here? :)  But it is not the "Alt" key that you should press. It is the right CTRL key and then scroll lock twice.

Sorry, yes that was a typo. I was trying the CTRL key, and Scroll Lock twice. After that would not work I tried using other keys with the Scroll Lock. None of them worked. I even tried setting the key combination to a different key set like CTRL, and Pausebreak. Sometimes I feel like opening the Window, and throwing this Laptop right out the Window. It's hard to find anything that I can install on this Sony Laptop that does not cause some sort of a problem. I've been building my own Desktops for years, and I never have any problems out of them. Looks like it's time to build my own Laptops from now on. It seems like if you want something done right then you have to do it yourself.

Swex, thanks for letting me know it worked for you! Are you still having problems with Windows hanging during boot as well? I've been having this problem for a long time, but it has gotten much worse recently. I thought it was other security products causing it until now. I uninstalled all other security products except for NOD 32, and Shadow Defender. Windows still continued to hang during boot. I uninstalled NOD 32, and used my Laptop for 3 days without it. I never had a single problem with Windows hanging. Now I have been using another AV for the past 5 days, and Windows does not hang anymore. It was definitely NOD 32 causing the problem.

Hi, no I don't have a problem with Windows hanging, but another problem with an Svchost.exe process starting to use 99% CPU when ever it likes, wich could be connected to the V7 BETA and that's why ESET requested a full mem dump from me. :)

Great to see you found a solution to your issue were you couldn't set it to create a full mem dump.

I hope they discover the problem. 99% is a crazy amount of CPU! Does it happen shortly after booting or does it seem to be totally random? Do you think the start up scan could be causing it?

  9. If I run process monitor during boot to create a log of the current state of all envoked processes then could that possibly provide the info needed to see the conflict NOD 32 is having? Would Process Monitor even be able to capture the needed info once Windows hangs? Here is an article describing how I intend to use Process Monitor. hxxp://www.msigeek.com/6231/how-to-enable-system-boot-time-logging-using-process-monitor-tool

  10. Sorry for the late reply. I have not had internet for two weeks because my ISP is incompetent of providing internet access to it's customers. My interent is always going out for long periods of time, and they have always been at fault each time.

I restored my Laptop to it's factory state. Then I installed all Windows updates, and updated all driver available from Sony. My Laptop still hangs right before or right after the desktop loads about 50% of the time. The only other realtime security application I have installed is Appguard, and I use Shadow defender on-demand. I completely uninstalled Appguard, and Windows still hangs when the desktop loads. As soon as I uninstall NOD 32 I have no more failed boots or problems with Windows hanging. I have tried to get Windows to hang since uninstalling NOD 32 2 days ago, and Windows no longer will hang.

Since i'm sure now that NOD 32 is causing Windows to hang I need support to assist me with using the hotkeys so I can force Windows to BSOD, and create a full memory dump once Windows hangs. I have tried several different hot key combinations that I read about on the interent as being the most often used to force a BSOD,  but none of them are working. I have been unable to force Windows to dump it's memory. I always end up having to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button in. I'm using a Sony Viao Laptop model VPCEB46FX. I already have Windows configured to create a kernal memory dump. Is there something I need to change in the registry to enable using the hotkeys to force a BSOD? Is there some way to find out which hot keys a specific computer is using to force a full memory dump? I have tried all of those I know about, but I have had no luck.

  11. I have noticed that when switching from automatic mode to interactive mode if an application is open, and currently communicating with the internet when switching it will create two entries in the application filter rule settings. It will show application.exe, and application.exe(2) Why is the firewall showing an application as .exe(2) when the only one that exist is simply just .exe.  I don't have two of the same application.
